The anime is good, one of the best of the year.
The anime story is apparently simple. In general the anime walks entirely based on the protagonist's search for revenge, this search results in events that, by themselves, change the course of history and ends up leaving this revenge in the background. The sequence of episodes is mostly interesting. The relationship of the main characters does not stop the desire to watch the work. The first half as expected is mostly revenge, and most seeking revenge.
The vinking theme explored in the anime is super interesting, the brutality of one of the most bloodthirsty people is well explored here. Village robberies in short are horrible to watch, especially the one where the script decides to exploit the village people and then assassinate them.
The characters are good, especially the one first presented as an antagonist and then become an almost protagonist Askellad. The protagonist has few layers, this is plausible, since he grew up in the midst of revenge. The rest of the characters are functional, the presentation of the prince is a bonus to the anime, and the work on his design is beautiful, he is well developed. Themes like religion and faith are well explored because of this prince. Overall a good story with good characters and great segment.
The animation is good. Whenever a work of the studio wit is announced the expected is at least good, but here came something more. The scenes in general are animated in a way that works and seems to be moving, detail, this is done with mastery, very few scenes cause discomfort because of animation, or rather lack thereof.
The steering manages to explore angles extensively during horseback riding and action scenes. Talking about action scenes, they are generally animated in 2d, rare exceptions are CGI. Already in fight scenes the use of CGI is made to magnify it. As already seen in anime from the same studio as Shingeki no Kyojin and Koutetsujpu no Kabaneri. The director of this anime, the director responsible until then for 3dcgi scenes in anime such as Shingeki no Kyojin, here he can show that he is more than a 3d animator. Viewing angles and rotating attack scenes are so well done that you can see yourself having flashbacks from Shingeki no Kyojin, which is a great achievement. Now, about the last episode, some angles were used to explore the territories of the anime with speed and grandeur, but without the necessary detail, it ended up looking badly rendered. Overall, great animation, creative scenes, and little bad CGI
Design is the strongest point of anime. Characters are very detailed, the costumes are well made, the cohesion with the sets are well executed, great. In the design part, even though it is the strongest point, it is in itself that lies the biggest flaw of the anime, the sea. It may seem strange that a Vikings anime that exploits pirates, the sea is bad, but unfortunately it is. The color placed on it is very dark, monochrome, lifeless. Whenever scenes with sea appeared the anime lost its brightness, however this is the only problem. The coloring in other parts of the anime is beautiful and very colorful. It is good to highlight the first half of the anime, it is full of woods, these woods are simply beautiful, gives a good feeling to see them. Spectacular design.
The anime music is good and cohesive. The soundtrack is generally made in epic and sometimes dramatic themes, great choice, are two of the most emotionally charged genres to explore. The music enters scenes where it is requested correctly, does not take anything out of the immersion, on the contrary, it increases.
Sound mixing is well done too. Unlike other anime that when walking the characters the sounds of the footsteps are only placed there, without concern for synchronization, here is different, in most scenes is well synchronized. Good job from the sound team and soundtrack.
The voiceover does not need comments. All characters are well interpreted, some could have more layers of interpretation, but the personality of the same would not allow it. The protagonist is incredibly well played, his voice is always raised to the full, and it's not just screams, it's emotion. The rest is good.
The anime is great, very well done. I can't decide which one pleased me most this year, this one or Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru.
